Harrisburg Lawyer John Howett Jr. to Receive Pennsylvania Bar Association Family Law Award

HARRISBURG (Dec. 3, 2018) — John “Jack” Howett Jr. will be presented with the 2019 PBA Family Law Section Eric Turner Memorial Award on Jan. 19 at the section’s Winter Meeting in Pittsburgh.

The Eric Turner Memorial Award honors a lawyer who is dedicated to the practice of family law and who serves as a mentor and teacher to fellow lawyers.

As part of the award, a $1000 donation will be made to the Mary K. Howett Scholarship Fund at Drexel University, a memorial scholarship selected by Howett that honors his late wife who was a well-known scientist.

A senior attorney at Howett, Kissinger & Holst P.C. in Harrisburg, Howett focuses his practice on matrimonial law.

Howett is a frequent lecturer on family law topics, including support guidelines, drafting marital settlement agreements and equitable distribution in divorce, and has authored books for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute on both the 1988 and the 2005 Divorce Code amendments.

Well known for his service to the legal profession, Howett has served on numerous Pennsylvania Supreme Court Committees involving family law, including the Domestic Relations Rules Committee, the Forms Revision Committee and the Appellate Court Rules Committee. He is also a Charter Member of the Joint State Government Advisory Committee on Domestic Relations Law where he serves as chair of the Subcommittee on Equitable Distribution. Howett additionally served as a Special Master in divorce in Dauphin County.

Howett has held numerous leadership roles in the Pennsylvania Bar Association, including two terms as a member of both the Board of Governors and the House of Delegates, and chair of the Family Law Section and Young Lawyers Division. He was also a past president of the Dauphin County Bar Association and chaired its Family Law Section. In addition, Howett is a fellow and former president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Pennsylvania chapter and a fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers.

Howett received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and a J.D. from Dickinson School of Law in 1974 after serving as an infantry officer in Vietnam.
